A leather MacBook sleeve should take about a second and a half to use. Ours does: your MacBook drops in end first, one brass snap closes over the top, and you're out the door. There is no flap to fold, no wrap to unwind, no magnet to line up, no zip to run around three sides while you hold the whole thing under your arm. Beautiful and quick are not opposites — most sleeves just make you pick one.

Nothing on it to fight with. Look at most leather laptop sleeves and you'll find a flap folded over a third of the front, an elastic strap, a magnetic wrap, or a zip pull swinging off a corner. Every one of those is a designer solving the closure problem by adding something, and every one is another thing to snag, tangle, or fumble in an airport line. This one solves it by leaving things off: the front is a single uninterrupted panel of English Bridle, and the only hardware anywhere on it is one solid brass snap on a three-inch tab.

Slim, because there's nothing in it that doesn't need to be there. Two panels of leather, a wool lining, a line of stitching around the edge. No gusset, no foam padding, no outside pocket, no second flap. A slim leather laptop sleeve isn't hard to design — it's hard to leave alone, because every feature you add is easier to put on a product page than the restraint you showed by skipping it. What you get instead is a clean face of bridle leather, unbroken by hardware, that ages into something worth looking at.

It opens at the short end. Most sleeves are a wide envelope you feed the laptop into sideways. This one opens on the short edge — your MacBook goes in end first, which makes the sleeve taller than it is wide. Book-shaped, in other words. For a workshop that spent its first years binding covers around screens, that's just the proportion we reach for.

The leather is the whole point

Wickett & Craig English Bridle, tanned in Pennsylvania since 1867. Wickett & Craig started in Toronto the year Canada became a country and has been tanning ever since — today on sixteen acres in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, as one of the only specialty vegetable tanneries left in the United States. Vegetable tanning is the slow way: no chrome, no shortcuts, a process the tannery itself calls labor-intensive and dependent on skilled hands. It's why almost everyone else stopped.

Drum dyed, then hot stuffed. The colour goes in by drum rather than sprayed on top, so it runs through the hide instead of sitting on it — scuff this leather and you find more of the same colour underneath, not a pale wound. Then it's hot stuffed: waxes and tallows worked into the grain and the flesh side while the leather is warm, until the fibres are packed with them. That's what gives English Bridle its density and its particular firm hand, and it's why a scuff burnishes back under your thumb instead of staying a scar.

It arrives firm and finishes soft. Bridle starts stiff. Two months in, it has given to the shape of your carry and no further. Wickett & Craig say their leathers "not only endure, but get better with age," which is the kind of line a tannery is entitled to when it has been proving it since 1867. Chestnut warms toward russet. Black deepens and takes on shine at the corners first. No two sleeves end up the same, and yours will not look like the photographs on this page in a year — it will look better.

If it can be a bridle, it can be a laptop sleeve

English Bridle is not named after a look. It's the leather specified for bridles, reins and harness — gear that gets rained on, sweated into, hauled at by a thousand-pound animal, and expected to hold. Wickett & Craig list it for everything "from classic equestrian gear to high-end leather goods," in that order, because the equestrian job was the original purpose and the harder one. Set against that, your commute is no test at all.

Wool-lined, all the way through

The full interior is lined in charcoal wool felt — not a strip at the opening, not a synthetic flock. Wool cushions the shell against knocks, wicks the condensation a warm laptop leaves in a cold bag, and won't score an aluminum lid the way a bare seam can. It's also where the slimness comes from: wool does the protecting, so the sleeve doesn't need the bulk of foam to earn its keep.

One snap, and it's a snap

Solid brass, on a leather tab. Magnets are the easy answer and we don't use them — a snap tells you it's closed, doesn't collect the loose paperclips in your bag, and will still hold in ten years when a magnet has given up half its pull. One closure, done properly, beats three closures hedging.

Sizes & fit

Does not fit the pre-Retina MacBook Air 13" (2010–2017) — that machine is wider than our 13-inch sleeve. If your Air predates 2018, our waxed canvas Durables sleeves cover it.
